The need to reduce pain (emotional, physical - or both) is a very real, very natural human need. The impact that substances have on our brains, minds and bodies, can very much overwhelm us - and may need support exit a cycle we never meant to start. Here at Psych Connect, we are dedicated to helping you in this process.
Brain Injury - Specialized Supports for Substance Use after a Brain Injury After a brain injury, it is possible to develop a substance use problem. Some brain injury survivors who never had concerns about substance use before their injury find themselves struggling with substances after. Sometimes this happens because of pain medication used to help in the short term after the injury. Sometimes alcohol may begin to be used more and more as self-medicating to ease pain or social discomfort. There are many possible roads to difficulty with substances after a brain injury, and brains after an injury are also more vulnerable to difficulty managing substances. This reality led clinical neuropsychologists in Ontario to get together to find a way to support and help brain injury survivors with substance use. This intervention, Substance Use in Brain Injury (SUBI) is a research backed therapy to help reduce the use, misuse, abuse, dependency and addictions to substances that may be present in brain injury survivors.
